Frequency at Which a Radiator Should Be Flushed

Simple vehicle maintenance procedure like radiator flush could add several years to vehicle’s lifespan enabling you to enjoy its maximum use. Every machine seem to operate efficiently at the right temperature and the same goes for vehicles too. A combination of two tanks and a core connected by several narrow tubes make up a car radiator. The narrow tubes bring in the air that cools the radiator coolant when it becomes hot because the car is switched on.

To avoid overheating of the engine that might result in breakdown or worse, it is recommended that radiator flushing be done. Flushing the engine removes dirt that might diminish the purity of the mixture of antifreeze and distilled water that cools the engine. To avoid corrosion of some engine parts the coolant should be regularly changed. Flushing of a radiator works best when the engine is fully cooled like a day when the vehicle has not been used.

Flushing a radiator entails getting rid of the dirty coolant and refilling it with a new one but for it to be effective a flushing agent must be used. Dirt particles in the engine can block its parts or cause corrosion hence the need of a flushing agent to remove them. Draining the coolant mixture can be easily done at home or at a local garage in case you need any help with it.

After putting the plug back, fill the engine with distilled water and flushing agent and the engine on and carefully follow instructions obtained with the flushing agent. To completely get rid of the cleaning mixture, open valves on the cylinder and drain the engine once again. If your fresh antifreeze need dilution, use distilled water while following manufacturer’s instruction before filling it in the clean engine. Excess air if not gotten rid of might result in minor overheating that might have serious damages to the engine.

Turn the engine on for a short time and then off again after checking the vehicle’s temperature to rid of trapped excess air. How often a radiator should be flushed depends on the vehicle and probably the weather you tend to drive in. A flush should be carried out whenever there is visible rust in the engine otherwise once in every five years is ok. To know how often you should flush your car’s radiator, view here for more.
